Abstract

Natural vegetable fibres are prepared, with a view to replacing asbestos, by impregnating them with a solution of wood glue of high enough concentration that, after drying, the fibres can be ground. In place of wood glue, a solution of milk casein first reduced to powder and rendered adhesive, may be used, esp. in the form of a bath contg. 100-500 g casein powder/l. water. Colloidal graphite may be added to the solution in an amount of 50-400g/l. The fibre, in the form of a skein, is immersed in the glue solution, then wrung out and dried. The fibres in ground form can be used more readily to replace asbestos in certain applications, e.g. in fibre reinforced cement boards, or friction materials such as brake linings.
