Abstract
A low density material suitable for floats, heat insulation, or constructional purposes is made from viscose sponge by soaking it in a solution of resin or resin-forming material, removing the surplus, and then hardening the resin. The surface may be reinforced by metal foil, wood veneer, or laminated paper board, which may be glued on, and may be coated with impermeable lacquer varnish. An artificial resin of the thermoplastic, thermosetting, or cold setting type is preferred. In an example, a sheet 1 1/2 inches thick of small pore viscose sponge of 0.064 grams per cc. density is impregnated with aqueous phenol-formaldehyde resin solution (50 per cent), the excess removed by pressing between rollers, and the sponge dried and cured at 145 DEG C. The resin content of the product was 67 per cent and its density 0.118. It can be machined without difficulty.
