Abstract

Appts. for recovering a layer of a pollutant floating on the surface of water comprises mechanical means by which the pollutant can be removed by absorption with max. elimination of water, and can be recovered in tanks. The mechanical means consist of a moving band mounted on an inclinable metal frame and driven by two drums, one of which is motorised. The band is made of spongy material or foam, e.g. polyethylene foam. Another drum mounted under the driven drum and forming a mechanical wringer is placed over a recovery tank. Problems associated with the use of dispersants, e.g. harmful effects on the marine environment, fish and undersea flora, and with the use of centrifugal separators which cannot operate in shallow water, are avoided.
