Abstract

The propulsion and/or steering unit for watercraft has a right-angled drive for the propeller. The unit (4-8) is located in a recess (2) in the side of the hull, making a watertight joint (9,10) with the top of the recess which is above the normal waterline. On the side opposite the propeller (5) a deep bracket (13) extends from the unit to a point close to the craft's side and roughly level with the unit/hull joint. A bar (14) on the end of the bracket rests in barings (15) fixed to the forward and after walls of the recess (2). Propeller shroud (7), drive housing (8) and bracket (13) are fitted with eyes (16,17,18) to which lines can easily be attached by a diver. The line from the shroud runs through a pulley fairlead (22) on the underside of the hill. To remove the unit the lines from the bracket and the drive housing are taken to suitably sited hoist, and no underwater operation is required.
