Abstract

A process for welding together materials that are difficult to weld by separate heating e.g. austenitic steel and pure Ti in which two blanks are first welded together by friction welding to form a connecting piece which is then welded at the ends to the parts to be joined. Tubular connecting pieces may be formed by boring out cylindrical blanks after welding together. Process allows the formation of high quality joints e.g. for nuclear energy applications, between conventionally incompatible materials.
