Abstract

Feed appts. for high pressure liq. chromatography columns comprises a housing, with feed inlet, into which the injection needle can be introduced. A non-return valve normally keeps the feed inlet closed and thus isolated from the high-pressure liq. in the column. To introduce a specimen, the injection needle is inserted into the feed inlet and forces back the non-return valve either by direct pressure of the needle tip upon the tapered point of the valve, or if the needle is short, by the higher pressure of the injected specimen. Previously where a polymer partition was used, and was pierced by the needle, after a certain number of uses this polymer started to absorb small quantities of specimens and thus contaminated further specimens. With the new arrangement, this difficulty does not arise. A satisfactory seal is provided by a succession of sealing plugs, each having a smaller internal dia. than the previous one, thus facilitating introduction of the needle tip.
