Abstract

1432833 Chromatographic analysis BRITISH PETROLEUM CO LTD 18 March 1974 (24 April 1973] 19266/73 Heading B1H [Also in Division F2] A valve for use in chromatographic analysers, e.g. for estimation of organic carbon in water, comprises a flexible tube 2 located between a pair of in-line connectors 3 to define therewith a continuous flow passage through the valve. When a pressure liquid or gas is delivered into chamber 1 via port 4, the tube collapses to close the passage. The tube may be circular or elliptical and formed of rubber or plastics. Samples for analysis are introduced into an analyser via a hypodermic needle 6 passed through the passage. The pressure in chamber 1 is relieved when the needle is inserted into or withdrawn from the passage. The valve may be actuated automatically by mounting the syringe on a sliding holder so that downward movement of the syringe activates the applied pressure. Alternatively, the applied pressure may be used to move the syringe and needle.
