Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A device for connection to a vessel, for example a chromatographic column (not shown) packed with silica gel to permit samples to be introduced to and taken from the vessel by an injection needle comprises a body 2 having opposed slots through which a selfsealing membrane 9 e.g. of transparent silicone rubber passes and a screw thread 4 and/or screw holes 6 for connection of the device to the vessel. The device also includes a screw cap 10 and a pipe 13 through which a carrier gas, e.g. N 2 or He, can be supplied to bore 3. The pipe 13 may be wound as a spiral around the body. The body and cap are preferably made of brass. In use after a needle has been introduced into and withdrawn from the bore the membrane can be moved to present an unpierced area for piercing on a subsequent operation. The membrane may be of a width and the slots so positioned that the membrane will be pierced only to one side of its centre line. After piercing all along its length the other half of the membrane can be used. In an alternative embodiment the membrane comprises a disc (Fig. 3 not shown).
