Abstract
A wall is built across a stream or tidal way with an opening (3) perpendicular to the stream in its lowest part. This produces an acceleration of the flow and a rise in the water level. Within the wall there is a series of rectangular blades (5, 6) running of whole length of the opening. They are propelled in a combination of motions by the movement of the water so that the forces exerted on them are added together. The blades are connected to each other by hinged links (2) to form an endless chain. At the two ends of the opening the chain revolves round drums in the form of a regular polygons whose sides have the same dimensions as the blades.
