Abstract

A signal indicative of the leading edge of an H.T. current pulse in the H.T. lead (4) between a distributor (3) and spark plug (5) of an IC engine is derived from an infra red light emitting diode (6). The infra red light is passed via a light guide (7) to an infra red light sensitive transistor (8) from which the requisite output signal pulse is derived. Use of the light guide (7) avoids generation of high frequency signal components which would otherwise cause disturbance. IR light emitting diode (6) is planed in series with a visible spectrum light emitting diode (10) observation of which in use, indicates correct operation of the device. Diodes (6) and (10) are shunted by diode (9) for protection against reverse current. In an alternative the device may be connected in the common H.T. lead (2) between the coil (1) and distributor (3) when timing information regarding all of the cylinders is required.
