Abstract

The safety tyre is divided into separate annular sections (3, 4) by radial walls (1) which run from the tread to the wheel rim (2). Each section has a separate inflation valve (5, 6) and is strong enough to support the wheel loading in emergencies. Two or more radial walls can be used for extra safety in heavy duty tyres. The tyre sections can be either tubeless or can be fitted with special inner tubes and valves. The wheel rim can be split, with the centre wall of the tyre clamped between its sections to seal each chamber from each other and from atmosphere.
