Abstract

Catalytic dissociation of O2 in air is carried out in the presence of a Ag-Mn catalyst, pref. at a volume throughput of 10000 h-1 at 20 degrees C or 10000 h-1 at 50 degrees C. The process is stable and effective enough for purificn. of dry or moist air from O3 at 20 degrees C, the O3 concn. being reduced from 1.0-0.1 vol % to under 0.005 ppm. The catalyst can be prepd. by promoting pyrolusite ore with 1 wt % Ag or synthetic MnO2 with 2.2 wt % Ag, the latter giving the higher activity. The O3 content of air with 80% RH at 10 degrees C was reduced from 0.01% to 0.05 ppm at a throughput of 5000 h-1 and normal pressure over a Ag-Mn catalyst based on synthetic MnO2.
