Abstract

1,241,576. Removing nitric oxide from waste gases. MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K.K. and UBE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Aug., 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 40371/68. Heading C1A. A method of treating a waste gas containing NO comprises providing a further gas having a high content of NO 2 , admitting the waste gas and a first portion of the further gas to a first inlet of an absorber containing an alkaline absorbent solution, and admitting at least one further portion of the further gas to at least one further inlet of the absorber downstream of the first inlet. Suitable absorbents are caustic soda, sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, ammonia and ammonium carbonate, and the ratio of NO 2 to NO in the absorber is preferably 1: 1 or more by volume, the absorption product then being the corresponding nitrite. The further gas rich in NO 2 may be provided by separating a portion of the waste gas and oxidizing its NO content to NO 2 using oxygen present in the waste gas or added air or oxygen, and using an active carbon or silica gel catalyst if required. Alternatively when used to treat the waste gases from the production of nitric acid by the absorption of ammonia oxidation products, a portion of the ammonia oxidation products may be passed to a tank where, on standing, the NO content is oxidized to NO 2 to produce the further gas rich in NO 2 . In a third alternative method, the further gas rich in NO 2 is produced by treating the ammonium nitrite solution formed by absorption of the NO/NO 2 mixture with nitric or sulphuric acid in the presence of oxygen.
