Abstract

Lime and gravel piles are bored or driven and formed in situ and are used for the stabilisation of glacial clays. They effect stabilisation by reducing the clay moisture content and are for use in highly acquiferred clays with low permeability. A tube liner (2) is installed with or without a driving shoe (8), followed by the placement of impervious bags of lime (4) and pervious bags of gravel (3) in the tube respectively above and below the water table (6) finally followed by tube extraction. The lime filled bags are burst by dynamic compaction during the process which is generally for use in high moisture content and low 'K' soils: and cement or other hydrated materials can be used in lieu of lime.
