(Classes 68 (i) and 85; In tunnelling through porous material below water by the shield method, a trench is excavated in the material and filled with yielding and impermeable material through which the tunnel is advanced. In Fig. 4, the trench 5 is filled with material such as clay or silt and tunnels 7. 8, are driven wholly in such material ; depressions may be left in the material above the tunnel sites, displacement of the material during tunnelling levelling ,off the surface. In Fig. 6, the tunnels 7a, 8a are formed partly in the clay &c. filling 6a and partly in the porous material 3a and rock 4a ; the tunnels may be formed by shields with bulkheads depending from the top of the shield to about the level of the bottom of the trench 5a and adapted to displace the clay &c. on advancing. A clay blanket 10 may be laid over the tunnel sites. Both methods may be used at different parts along the same tunnel. ,
