Abstract

The steel contains, apart from impurities, or elements having an effect on the hardenability, 0.25% carbon max; 0.7-1.5, esp. 1-1.2% Mn; and immediately after hot-rolling the plates are quenched at a speed above 20 degrees C/sec. The quenching operation may also take place during a rolling cycle. When quenching occurs after hot-rolling, the pref. quenching temp. is 750-850 degrees, esp. 780-850 degrees C and after quenching the max. temp of the steel should be 350 degrees C. The carbon content may be 0.15% max. depending on the elastic-limit and impact-strength required and in all cases the pref. quenching speed id above 30 degrees C/sec. Plate obtd is used for large dia pipe-lines, shipbuilding and constructional steel-work. high elastic limit, without the addn of alloying elements or extra heat-treatment is obtd.
