Abstract

The rail is for mounting alongside a road on a number of columns at regular intervals. The columns yield fully on a vehicle colliding with them, so as to absorb part at least of the shock, and the rail is self-tightening. The columns can be inclined, and yield in a direction parallel to the road, also at right angles to it. The rail can be attached to the columns above road level by devices yielding on collision, some at least of the columns being flexibly mounted on the ground. The rail can be of channel section, with the flanges at 30 or 60 deg. to the base, being attached to the columns by one of them. The sections of it can overlap, being so designed that they can move for a limited amount only in the lengthwise direction in relation to each other.
