Abstract

Sepg. a mixt. of solid and liq. phases consists of passing the mixt. through a pipe made of matl which is permeable to the liq. and moving along the pipe in discrete vols. each bounded by two cross-sections of the pipe and the pipe wall while being continually compressed. This can be achieved by pushing constant length volvs. of mixt. Through a pipe of reducing cross-section or pushing reducing length vols. of mixt. through a pipe of constant cross-section; or by combining the two pressure-applying features. Method is useful for draining the liq. phase out of a mixt. of solid and liq. phases, e.g. suspensions or gels, notably fruit juice from its pulp and, partic., whey from cheese curds. The process delivers semi-continuously a supply of drained, separated solids and exuded liquid. In the sepn. of curds from whey, esp. The process is faster and requires less labour than previous processes; the yield of whey is high as it is not allowed to stick to the inside of the pipe.
