Abstract

The internal combustion engine is a four stroke reciprocating piston type. There is an air inlet port to the crankcase which is uncovered when the cylinder is at top dead centre. The air trapped in the crankcase is then compressed as the piston descends. At bottom dead centre the exhaust ports from the crankcase are uncovered, allowing the compressed air to pass into the cylinder. The charge already drawn into the cylinder is now diluted to the correct mixture strength before being compressed for the power stroke. Combustion now takes place as in conventional engines, but on the exhaust stroke the additional charge of air from the crankcase proveds scavenger air. Variations provide for the additional air charge to be supplied through a supercharger and for the charge to be metered.
