Abstract

Sulphuric acid wastes (acid and oleum tars), e.g. from the refining of n-paraffins with H2SO4 or oleum, with a high H2SO4 content, a high viscosity and a low calorific value (>=1000 kcal/kg) are economically utilised by a continuous process in which (a) the wastes are continuously sprayed in finely divided form (=500 mu) with excess air or O2-contg gas (pref. a =10 vol. % excess) into a cylindrical furnace; (b) the particles are burnt at 900-1200 degrees C for =5 sec. using a gas or oil support burner (pref. fired with S-contg waste or residual oil); (c) the hot SO2-contg. combustion gases are scrubbed with H2O; and (d) the resulting SO2 is reacted with an aqs. alkali metal or NH4 bisulphite soln (pH 4.0-5) to form neutral or acid sulphite salts.
