Abstract

A gas turbine is driven by sulphur dioxide produced in the combustion chamber of the turbine, the sulphur dioxide thereby being cooled. The sulphur dioxide may be produced by burning sulphur, pyrites or "waste sludge" (a viscous acid material resulting from the purification of petroleum and lubricating oils by treatment with sulphuric acid). In the combustion of pyrites, a dust separator is inserted between the combustion chamber and the turbine. The walls of the combustion chamber may be maintained at 300 DEG C. by heat-exchange with molten sulphur to be burnt. The sulphur dioxide may be further cooled by passage from the gas turbine through a waste heat boiler. Alternatively or in addition, further cooling may be effected by passing the sulphur dioxide through a heat-exchanger for preheating the oxygen-containing gas for the combustion. The sulphur dioxide may then be catalytically converted into sulphuric acid directly or via the production of sulphur trioxide. Prior compression of the oxygen-containing gas may be effected in an axial, centrifugal or displacement type compressor. The compressor may have two stages. The gas turbine may be of the axial or radial flow type and may have four stages. Corrosion vulnerable surfaces may be of high chromium steel, nickel-chromium-cobalt alloy, or aluminium.
