Abstract
In the catalytic oxidation of SO2 to SO3, the residual SO2-containing gases after absorption of SO3, having a temperature of not more than 60 DEG C., are washed with water or aqueous, preferably 10-15%, H2SO4; the SO2-laden liquid is blown with air and recycled to the washing stage; and the SO2-laden air is returned to the contact chamber. The washing and blowing out may be effected in packed towers through which gas and liquid pass in countercurrent. The residual gases after SO2 has been removed may be passed through an electrostatic filter and discharged to the atmosphere.
