Abstract

Films with gas (air) filled pockets as blisters on one or both faces are made by partially flattening and guiding freshly extruded and inflated thermoplastic film towards nip rolls where one or both is scalloped with cavities. The cavities are lined by locak deformation of the internally pressurised film just before the two opposing film faces are brought into contact while still hot enough to fuse. For producing blisters on one face, the film guide rolls which precede the nip rolls are offset w.r.t. the extrusion axis towards the cavity roll so as to produce assymetric flattening of the film and produce contact with the scalloped roll before the opposing roll. Blister formation may be vacuum assisted from within the nip roll(s). Process is more efficient and more easily controlled than others which reheat and laminate two independent stock films. Blister formation traps air at a positive pressure so that the blisters are not collapsed upon cooling to ambient temp.
