Abstract

1,074,317. Tubular films; laminates. T. J. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd. Feb. 8, 1966 [Nov. 18, 1964], No. 46947/64. Headings B5B and B5N. A process for the production of thermoplastic films comprises extruding a thermoplastics material through an annular die, inflating the tube formed and collapsing the inflated tube between the nip rolls just before the position of the frost line to produce a laminated lay-flat film. The frost line is defined as the point when the transparent extruded material becomes translucent due to crystallization. Specified thermoplastic materials, which when at a temperature above their softening point will stick to each other when pressed together include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride, ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymers and polyvinylidene chloride. The rate of cooling of the film may be controlled by the temperature of the gas used to form the bubble, which should be high enough to allow the extruded film to expand to the required diameter before the nipping together and resulting lamination. The pressure of the gas may also be adjustable for this purpose and if required the nip rolls may be heated. Preferably the nip rolls are formed from or coated with a non-adherent material, for example polytetrafluoroethylene. The temperature of the atmosphere around the exterior of the extruded tube may be controlled so that the cooling of the tube is slowed down, and this may suitably be effected by the provision of shields around the exterior of the extruded film. In operation, the two internal contacting surfaces of the flattened bubble of film are so hot when they contact each other that the resulting laminated film is free from pin holes extending right through from one side to the other, it being extremely unlikely that any pin holes present in one lamination will coincide with pin holes in the other lamination.
