Abstract
The reactors, of different types, each have coolant circuits contg. the prim. sides of heat exchangers whose sec. sides are series connected in the working fluid circuit of the power consuming plant. The coolant outlet temp. of the first reactor, esp. a fast breeder reactor, is relatively low and that of the second, esp. a gas-cooled thermal reactor relatively high. The coolant may be liq. Na or liq. Li in the first; in alternative arrangement both reactors may be gas cooled, the coolant being CO2 or He or the prim. sides of the heat exchangers may be commoned in a single coolant circuit with gas turbine pressure matching between the two reactors and CO2 alone used as coolant. The second reactor is esp. a gas-graphite type; the fission zone fuel in the breeder reactor is U and Pu esp. alloyed, that in the breeder zone of that same first reactor is U or Th based as is the fissile material in the gas cooled reactor. The lower working temp. reactor uses esp. fuel in metallic form and in the higher temp. reactor in ceramic form.
