Feb. 19, 1962 [March 3, 1961], No. 7790/61. Heading G6C. A concrete pressure vessel 1 surrounds the core 2 of a nuclear reactor, and a layer 5 of heat conducting material lines the inner wall of the vessel and each penetration of the vessel, and pipes 6 containing a circulating cooling fluid are associated with the layer 5. These pipes 6 are preferably attached to the layer 5 by welding, but they may be located inside the layer itself (Fig. 3, not shown). Inlet and outlet ducts 3 and 4 enable a fluid to cool the core, and cooling ducts are arranged helically around the inlet and outlet ducts. A further layer 8 having thermal insulating properties is placed on the heat conducting layer 5 to prevent heat flow from the reactor and also to reduce the flow of neutrons to the concrete vessel. A heat resisting concrete may be used for this purpose. This layer 8 is made of neutron absorbing material. The cooling ducts 6, which may contain water are preferably arranged in parallel in single passes through the vessel so that should a stoppage occur in any duct the area where a hot spot can occur is less than in a multi-pass system. Further reduction in hotspots occuring is obtained by having a duplicate system of ducts.
