Abstract

Liq. crystal display device comprises a polarisn. a 1st transparent electrode, a thin film of nematic liq. crystal in contact with the electrode, a 2nd electrode contacting the other side of the liq. crystal and a 2nd polariser disposed so that light which has passed through the liq. crystal, opt. after reflection at the 2nd electrode, passes also through the 2nd polariser. Specif. each electrode has an epitaxially absorptive effect on the liq. crystal, and has a topology corresp. in a straight beam parallel to those associated with the 2nd surface, and the axes of the liq. crystals are in planes perpendicular to the surface of the electrodes. Apptn. shows a change of colour of the liq. crystal on applying a voltage between the electrodes.
