Abstract

Parent patent describes a gripper jaw for a weft picking needle of a shuttle-less loom and including a movable jaw spring biassed to a closed position against a fixed jaw. The movable jaw has a cam formation which co-operates pref. with a fixed roller to open the movable jaw and a locking element which is slidably mounted in the needle is spring biassed (e.g. by a compression spring) to a position in which the movable jaw is held open. Means are provided for neutralising the locking element and in the improvement this comprises an inextensible flexible cable secured at one end to the locking element and at the other end to a lever mounted pref. on a reciprocating drive arm for the picking needle. Adjacent the lever the cable passes around a curved guide carried pref. on the needle, and the fixed cam acts on the lever to cause the cable to pull the locking element against the action of the compression spring to a position in which the movable jaw can close. Pref. limit stops are provided to limit movement of the lever. The jaw operates with less vibration and shock producing a better weave.
