Abstract

The fluids consist of (A) 80-20 pts wt. glycol mono-ether selected from (1) >=1 monoalkoxy trialkylene glycol of formula H-(OCH2CHX)3-Or (where X is H or -CH3 and R is 1-8C alkyl), (2) a mixt. of (A1) and >=1 carbitol (RTM) of formula H-(OCH2CH2)2 OR' (where R' is 1-4C alkyl), or (3) butyl carbitol, and (B) 20-50 pts reaction product of 1 mol H3BO3 with 2-6 mols >=1 alkylene glycol of formula H-(A)xOH, (in which A is oxyethlene or oxypropylene and x is 2-8). Pref. compsns. contain 80-65 pts (A) and 20-35 pts (B). (A) is pref. triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, butyl carbitol or mixts. (B) is pref. a reaction prod. of 1 mol H3BO3 and 3 mols H-(A)xOH where x is 3,4 or 5. They are suitable for use as brake fluids in vehicles and meet the requirement for b.pt. of >=155 degrees C, after water absorption as well as other USA requirements for DOT-4 fluids.
