Abstract

SO2 is eliminated from a gas by contacting with a relatively dilute aq. soln of a neutral sulphite of NH4 or an alkali metal, at 0-90 degrees C, to obtain a soln. enriched in acid sulphite and depleted in neutral sulphite, this soln being contacted with a weak anion exchanger thus regenerating the soln. which is recycled to contact the gas, and enriching the exchanger with SO2. The enriched exchanger is periodically regenerated by contact with a relatively conc. aq. ammonia soln. so as to produce a relatively conc. soln. of neutral ammonium sulphite which is converted in known manner to S
