Abstract

and/or S is prepd. by contacting an ammonium salt of an acidic oxygenated sulphur cpd. in liquid S with H2S or (NH4)2S. The ammonium salt is pref. ammonium sulphate. The reaction is effected at 250-440 pref. 250-350 degrees C. Sulphur is obtained by contacting ammonium sulphate and H2S in a molar ratio of 1/3, and SO2 is obtained by contacting ammonium sulphate and H2S in a molar ratio of 3/1.
