Cpds. of formula (I): where R1 = H, hal, (1-3C) alkyl, (1-3C) O-alkyl, or CF3 R2 = H, hal, (1-3C) O-alkyl, or NH2; R3 = H, alkyl, Ph or PhCH2; R4 = alkyl, cycloalkyl, Ph or R5 = H, hal, (1-3C) alkyl, or (1-3C) O-alkyl, R6 = H, Ph or (1-3C) alkyl; X = O, S or double bond. m = 0-3, and n = 0-4; and salts of I are known tranquillisers, sedatives and adrenolytics. I are prepd. via the corresp. co-acid amide by (a) reducing e.g. with LiAlH4, and (b) oxidising the novel 1-aryl substd. aminoalkan-1-ols, e.g. with MnO2.
