Abstract

2-Cyanobenzimidazole derivs. New cpds. of formula (I) (where R= =Hal, alkyl, or CO2 alkyl, and R2-R5 = H, hal, NO2, or opt. subst. alkyl,) and their salts, are of use as parasiticides (esp. anthelmintics), fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides. (I) are prepd.:-(a) by reaction of the 2-trichloromethyl deriv. with NH3, (b) by dehydration of the 2-alkoxime or carbonamide, (c) by alkylation or alkoxycarbonylation of I (R' = H). Thus refluxing benzimidazole-2-carbonamide (40 parts), with POCl3 (1200 parts) for 6 hr. gave 2-cyano-benzimidazole (25.5 parts), m.p. 294-5 degrees (from EtOH).
