It is common practice to employ hydrocyclones to extract granular materials from the liquid which contains them.
It is often sought to obtain that the granular product leaving the tip of the cyclone contains as little liquid as possible, thus carrying out a more or less thorough dewatering.
Thus, for water and sand for example, we manage to get out at the tip of the cyclone a product containing between 20 and 25% water by weight. However, it should be noted that if the installation includes only an ordinary cyclone, the result obtained by this operation is not always satisfactory.
Indeed, if for the so-called nominal capacity of the cyclone, or rather of the cycloning installation, we manage to get a product out at the desired humidity level, on the other hand if the hourly feed tonnage exceeds this nominal capacity, a part sand to be wrung out comes out at the overflow and is lost.
If, on the contrary, the hourly feed tonnage is lower than the nominal tonnage, the humidity of the extracted product increases greatly. Ultimately, for a very low tonnage, the sand comes out at the tip in a violent current of water.
Such an operation, which adapts so badly to fluctuations in the hourly feed tonnage. is generally detrimental to the proper functioning of the installations which include this cycloning circuit.
Numerous arrangements have been proposed and tested for remedying these defects using valves. regulation of pressures and flows. They do not fully achieve their purpose for various reasons, and practically can give industrial satisfaction only in rare cases.
The object of the invention is a process which makes it possible to fully achieve the fixed aim, which is to obtain a product which is drained at a low and substantially constant degree of humidity whatever the carrier liquid and its material content.
The process according to the invention is essentially characterized in that the wetted material coming out of the tip of the cyclone is received in a container placed under the tip and from which the material overflows as it is in the cyclone, the relative position of the container with respect to the cyclone being adjusted so that when the apparatus is stopped the end of the tip of the cyclone is a little below the overflow edge of the container and when is in operation, the end of the tip of the cylinder is lightly embedded in the wet material contained in the container.
The hydraulic operation of the cyclone will be adjusted by any conventional means so that the average pressure at the tip of the cyclone is very slightly lower than the pressure of the external atmosphere when the cyclone is supplied only with liquid.
Under these conditions, when the cyclone is supplied with material, said mean pressure increased and the product leaves the tip under the effect of this mean pressure which is transmitted through the mass of material contained in the container and causes said overflow.
Different arrangements are provided for the application of the method according to the invention.
'According to a first arrangement, the container is fixed, and suitably adjusted in height, so that the tip of the cyclone is a little below the overflow edge of the container.
As soon as the material is supplied to the cyclone, the layer of material in the container rises and begins to overflow at the periphery.
The penetration of the tip therefore increases in the layer of material to a maximum corresponding to the maximum feed rate of material to the cyclone.
This increase in the depression of the tip has the effect of requiring a higher pressure at the inlet of the cyclone.
Furthermore, it is observed that under these conditions, as soon as the proportion of coarse materials, that is to say greater than approximately one millimeter, reaches a very high value, the porosity increases appreciably as the pressure of the materials does not increase. transmits more in the mass, the overflow is then done in bad conditions, and the water leaves without suitably carrying the materials, which then accumulate without the cyclone and exit by the upper opening.
In order to avoid these drawbacks, an additional arrangement allows self-regulation of the insertion of the point.
This self-regulation is obtained, according to the invention, by providing the container with means allowing its automatic displacement as a function of the average outlet pressure of the material at the tip of the cyclone, linked to the flow rate of the material, which results in decrease the sag of the tip when the material flow rate increases.
According to a first variant, this automatic movement of the container is carried out vertically by means of a system of springs and possibly an appropriate guide.
According to another variant, this automatic movement of the container is effected by tilting around a horizontal axis located above and vertically from the center of gravity of the container assumed to be full, this vertical being slightly offset from the axis of the container. cyclone.
In the arrangements according to the invention, when the supply of material is stopped, the overflow ceases (in the case of movable containers, these then return to their initial position of equilibrium) and the tip remains embedded in the material.
In this case, the level of water in the mass of the material remaining in the container drops under the effect of the central suction of the cyclone, to the level of the orifice of the tip and stabilizes, a slight a quantity of air is then sucked into the interior of the cylinder through the top layer of materials and the installation is ready to operate as soon as it is supplied with material again.
The container may have a variable depth but it may be shallow, such that there is simply a sufficient layer of material so that the tip can be submerged in the desired amount and that the flow of material exiting the tip can take place. set appropriately to overflow from the container.
On the other hand, the diameter of the container must be sufficient to allow the passage of the material between the tip of the cyclone 'and the side walls of the container so that said material can easily overflow.
In practice, we can admit a diameter of the order of 5 to 10 times that of the tip of the cyclone.
In the case of the container with articulated suspension, its eccentricity relative to the axis of the cyclone will be chosen so as to have a suitable sensitivity, this eccentricity being practically of the order of half the diameter of the outlet of the tip. of the cyclone.
In order to make the execution better understood, several non-limiting embodiments will now be described by way of example, with reference to the appended figures, in a sand dewatering installation by means of cyclones: FIG. 1 is a view diagram of a cyclone comprising a fixed container placed under its point; FIG. 2 is a schematic view of a cyclone comprising an oscillating container placed under its tip, the supply of materials being stopped; Figure 3 is a view of the arrangement of Figure 2, the installation being in operation; FIG. 4 is a schematic view of a variant in which the container can be moved vertically.
We see in Figure 1 a conventional hydrocyclone 1 with its tangential supply conduit 2 in liquid and materials, its upper discharge conduit 3 for the liquid, the outlet of this conduit being at 4 substantially at the level of the tip 5 of said cyclone so as to obtain the proper hydraulic adjustment of the cyclone. This adjustment can be obtained by known means such as valves at the end of the tube 4 and / or by causing the latter to flow into a constant-level tank flooding its outlet.
According to the invention, a container 6 is placed below the tip 5, the overflow edge 10 of which is slightly above the end of the tip 5.
At 8, a material receiving hopper provided with an evacuation duct 9.
In this arrangement, the material leaves the tip 5 under a certain average pressure which is transmitted into the mass of material 7 contained in the receptacle 6 and causes it to overflow through the upper part 10 of the latter into the receiving hopper 8.
The overflowing material exhibits a low moisture content which remains substantially constant despite possible material variations in the feed rate. However, this arrangement requires a fairly high pressure at the inlet of the cyclone, as the level of the layer of material rises in the container during operation, flooding the
