Abstract

Alkynols are produced by a process which comprises reacting excess acetylene with a lactone, preferably acetone, in a solvent which is either liquid ammonia or an up to C6 aliphatic amine in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal hydroxide as an aqueous solution, wherein the molar ratio of alkali metal hydroxide to ketone is not greater than 1:10, and preferably between the limits of 1:30 and 1:200, and the reaction is carried out in the presence of water in a quantity that, during the reaction, does not total more than 10% by weight with respect to the solvent used, including the water formed in the reaction, the reaction being carried out at -40 DEG to 40 DEG C. The examples describe the use of ammonia and a plant for continuous operation is illustrated by means of a flow sheet (not shown).
