In an effort to improve the absorption properties of tobacco smoke filters, various additives have been added to them in particulate, or granular form. For this purpose, fine charcoal, silica gel, volcanic salts, ion exchange resins, clay and the like and other absorbents have been applied to them. This insertion is made by dusting, spraying, slurrying or otherwise placing the additives in the material which forms the main part of the filter structure. This fibrous material can slide paper, fluffy yarn, fibrous rope, or other material known in the art. When granular additives are applied to or sprinkled on the fibers, they tend to separate or move apart during the filter formation step or when the filter element is in use. In addition, the release of particulate material may prove repulsive, especially when the released particles enter the smoker's mouth. In this respect, attempts to use adhesives to attach additives have not proved successful, as these adhesives generally render the absorption properties of the additives ineffective.

Another method of making multiple filters, filters with granular or particulate additive material, involves obtaining short filter segments of selected material and arranging them at intervals and then inserting additives between the segments to obtain a multiple filter rod in which the granules are loose. The filter assembly is optionally cut to obtain multiple filters with a grain portion between them. This method of manufacture, while effective, involves costs that significantly increase the cost of the embedded particulate material. In addition, the acquisition of short filter plug parts and the introduction of particulate material as planned causes, especially in high-speed machinery, many difficulties, including losses and downtime of production machinery.
When reforming these previously used or conceived working methods and methods, it has often been concluded that an oversized and expensive device is added to the assembly, which also increases the overall cost of the finished filter rods.
Näiden haittojen poistamiseksi on ehdotettu useita menetelmiä ja laitteita. Esimerkiksi Yhdysvaltain patentti n:o 3 371 000 ja julkaisu Defensive Publication 775 57β esittävät työtavan raemaisen lisäainemateriaalin panemiseksi välimatkojen päähän jatkuvasti liikkuvaan suodatinmateriaaliin. Lopuksi muovataan suodatintanko, jossa on välimatkojen päässä olevat, raemaista materiaalia sisältävät jaksot.Several methods and devices have been proposed to overcome these disadvantages. For example, U.S. Patent No. 3,371,000 and Defensive Publication 775,57 disclose a method of placing a granular additive material at a distance in a continuously moving filter material. Finally, a filter rod with spaced apart sections containing granular material is formed.
US-patenttiin n:o 3 371 000 perustuvassa työtavassa on vielä olemassa raemaisen materiaalin siirtymisongelmia. Tämä patentti kohdistuu menetelmään, jossa on vaikeaa ohjata rakeiden jakelua sekä niiden sijoitusta muodostettuun savuketankoon niin, että tanko voidaan leikata raevyöhykkeiden välistä ja siten estää rakeita joutumasta tupakoitsijan huulille,There are still problems with the transfer of granular material in the working method based on U.S. Patent No. 3,371,000. This patent relates to a method in which it is difficult to control the distribution of the granules and their placement in the formed cigarette rod so that the rod can be cut between the zones of granules and thus prevent the granules from getting on the smoker's lips,
Tämän ilmiön aiheuttaa tangon muovauskoneen köyden sivuun kohdistama kampaava paine, josta on seurauksena välimatkan päässä olevan kuvion kiertyminen valmiissa tangossa.Another difficulty in depositing particulate material into a continuously moving web is contamination of the cutting surface and tobacco, respectively, due to the displacement of the particulate material. In addition, this situation is exacerbated by the triangulation of the spaced particle pattern, as a result of which the pattern is not uniformly or concentrically arranged with respect to the center line of the rod. This phenomenon is caused by the combing pressure exerted on the side of the rope by the rod forming machine, which results in the rotation of the spaced pattern in the finished rod.
According to immediate and factual information, neither of these patents has entered into commercial use for the purpose for which this invention is devoted.

Aluksi viitataan kuvioon 1, jossa oleva laitteisto 10 on valmistettu muodostamaan moninkertaisen suodatintangon, jossa on välimatkojen päässä sijaitsevat 5871 8 li ontelot, joissa on hienojakoista hiukkasten tai rakeiden muodossa olevaa lisäainetta· Tämä yhtämittainen tanko leikataan osiin laitteella 10 ja poistetaan sopivasti sen purkauspäästä. Kuviossa 2 on tällä laitteella muovattu tyypillinen tangon osa 12. Erikoinen, tähän keksintöön ajateltu lisäaine on ioninvaihtohartsi "Duolite", joka voi olla sitä tyyppiä, joka julkistettiin 13 p:nä helmikuuta 1973 myönnetyssä US-patentissa n:o 3 716 500.Referring first to Figure 1, the apparatus 10 is made to form a multiple filter rod with spaced cavities 5871 8 having a finely divided additive in the form of particles or granules. This continuous rod is cut into parts by the apparatus 10 and suitably removed from its discharge end. Figure 2 shows a typical rod part 12 molded by this device. A filter material, for example a fibrous cellulose acetate rope 11+, can be used to form the part 12 of these multiple filter rods. Instead of cellulose acetate, the filter material may be paper, fluffy yarn or other fibrous rope, or any other suitable material. The spaced cavities 16 may contain an additive 18 having the desired absorbency or absorption properties. The particles 18 may be finely divided charcoal, silica gel, volcanic salts, ion exchange resins, clay and the like. A particular additive contemplated by this invention is the ion exchange resin "Duolite", which may be of the type disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 3,716,500, issued February 13, 1973.
Yhtämittainen selluloosa-asetaattiraina vedetään tavallisesta varastosäiliöstä rainan avausyksikköön 20, joka levittää tai pursuttaa rainan suodattimen valmistuksen alalla hyvin tunnetulla tavalla. Avattu tai levitetty raina 22 menee tavallisen pehmittimen jakelijan 2k kautta. Selluloosa-asetaattirainan pehmitti-menä käytetään tavallisesti triasetiiniä. Raina pehmittimineen siirretään pur-kausrullan 26 ja rullan 28 puserruskohtaan. Kuten pian yksityiskohtaisesti selitetään, syötetään raina jaksottain jakeluaseman 3l+ läpi, ja painorullajärjestelmä 30 ottaa vastaan samassa suhteessa jatkuvasti syötetyn rainan viivästyksen aikana eli aikajaksona, jolloin raina pysäytetään jakeluasemalla 3l+. Tämä rainan vastaanotto esitetään kuviossa 1 pistekatkoviivalla. Hiukkasten jakeluaseman 3*+ sisääntulopäähän sijoitettu torvi 32 on suunniteltu painamaan litistetty raina 22 oleellisesti U-maiseen muotoon, kuten kuviossa 5 esitetään, valmiiksi vastaanottamaan välimatkojen päähän asetetut hiukkasmateriaalipanokset 18.The continuous cellulose acetate web is drawn from a conventional storage tank into a web opening unit 20 which spreads or extrudes the web in a manner well known in the art of filter making. The opened or applied web 22 passes through a conventional plasticizer distributor 2k. Triacetin is usually used as the plasticizer for the cellulose acetate web. The web with the plasticizer is transferred to the compression point of the discharge roller 26 and the roller 28. As will be explained in detail shortly, the web is fed periodically through the dispensing station 31 +, and the weight roll system 30 receives the web continuously fed in the same proportion during the delay, i.e., the time period during which the web is stopped at the dispensing station 31 +. This web reception is shown in Figure 1 by a dotted line. The horn 32 located at the inlet end of the particle distribution station 3 * + is designed to press the flattened web 22 into a substantially U-shaped shape, as shown in Figure 5, ready to receive the particulate material charges 18 placed at the distances.
The dispensing station, as shown in detail in Figures 1 and 6, operates to discharge measured amounts of selected particulate material at distances to the bottom of the U-shaped web 22 projecting from the horn 32. The particulate material 18, which is fed from the hopper 1 + 2 by gravity, fills the cavities or holes 1 + 3 of the reciprocating distribution plate 1 + 1 +. The holes 1 + 3 are precisely aligned or fitted to the discharge openings 1 + 5 »through which the measured amounts of particles fed by the distribution plate 1 + 1 + are adapted to be counted on the momentarily stopped dough 22. The openings 1 + 5 are arranged longitudinally at predetermined intervals 22 along the web 22. the periodic movement involves a periodically used suction belt 1 + 6 which feeds a predetermined part of the web 22 and the particulate charges 18 thereon and from the distribution station 31 + to place the next corresponding part of the web 22 at this station. In order to facilitate and accelerate the lowering of the cartridges 18 from the discharge openings 1 + 5 to the web 22 and at the same time to prevent the particles from moving, the vacuum system i + 7 creates a vacuum and consequently generates suction through the belt h6 and the fabric 22 during the particle distribution operation. As can be seen, this vacuum can be used continuously or intermittently during distribution. As can be seen, the winding plate i + i * is initially placed as shown in Fig. 6 so that its holes U3 are below the end of the hopper 1 * 2 for receiving the measured amounts of particulate material. When the web 22 has stopped at the dispensing station 3 * +, the plate 1 * 1 + is moved so that these holes 1 * 3 are in line with the openings 1 * 5, with the result that the measured amounts of particulate matter fall on the stopped web from the vacuum system 1 * 7. through. The plate 1 * 1 * is then returned to its initial position for the next particle distribution operation.
U-muotoinen raina 22 ja sille välimatkojen päähän asetettu, valittu hiukkasmateriaali 18 menevät välittömästi jakeluaseman 3l* perässä olevaan tangon muodostus- ja ohjauslaitteeseen 50. Tämä yksikkö toimii panemalla alkuun U:n muotoisen rainan 22 sivujen kietomisen välimatkojen päässä olevien hiukkasmate-riaalipanosten 18 ympärille. Oleellisesti sylinterimäinen raina ja siinä välimatkojen päässä olevat hiukkasmateriaalin 18 ontelot yhdessä hihnan 1*0 jaksottain käyttämän päällysteen 36 kanssa syötetään viimeistelylaitteeseen 52 tangon muodostamisen täydentämiseksi. Viimeistelykieleke paljastaa päällysteen 36 sivureunojen toisen laidan liiman levittimelle 5I+ ja tämä reuna taitetaan toisen reunan päälle taittajan 55 avulla siten, että levitetty liima on välissä tarkoituksella sulkea päällyste tangon ympärille. Päällystetty tanko syötetään kuumentimen 56 läpi ja välittömästi paloitteluasemalle 58, jossa päällystetty tanko leikataan kappaleiksi 12 (kts. kuv. 2). The U-shaped web 22 and the spaced, selected particulate material 18 immediately go to the bar forming and guide device 50 behind the dispensing station 31 *. This unit operates by initiating the wrapping of the sides of the U-shaped web 22 around the spaced apart particulate material charges 18. The substantially cylindrical web and the spaced cavities of particulate material 18 therein, together with the coating 36 periodically used by the belt 1 * 0, are fed to a finishing device 52 to complete the formation of the rod. The finishing tab exposes the side edge of the side edges of the coating 36 to the adhesive applicator 5I + and this edge is folded over the other edge by the folder 55 so that the applied adhesive is interposed to intentionally seal the coating around the rod. The coated rod is fed through a heater 56 and immediately to a cutting station 58 where the coated rod is cut into pieces 12 (see Fig. 2). The operation of the feeding device is synchronized with the feeding of the web through the distribution station 3 + + and the feeding of the coating 36, so that the operation of the cutting device can be intermittent.
Kun yksittäiset tangon osien 12 tulpat on leikattu, kuten kuviossa 2 on esitetty, ja sovitettu savukkeen tyvipäähän, sytytetyn savukkeen savu joutuu onteloon 16 ja siten alttiiksi jyväsmateriaalille, koska tupakoitsijän savuketta tuprutellessa tämän vyöhykkeen redusoitu paine pienenee. Tällä tavalla savu voidaan vakioida halutussa määrässä valitun hiukkasmateriaalin 18 avulla. When the individual plugs of the rod portions 12 are cut, as shown in Figure 2, and fitted to the base end of the cigarette, the smoke of the lit cigarette enters the cavity 16 and thus is exposed to the granular material as the reduced pressure in this zone decreases as the smoker smokes. In this way, the smoke can be conditioned in the desired amount by means of the selected particulate material 18.
Katkoviivat 1¾ osoittavat ne kohdat, joista leikkaukset voidaan tehdä tulpan valmistuslaitteen 10 terällä 58 kuviossa 2 esitetyn tyyppisten nelinkertaisten kaksoissuodatintanko-osien saamiseksi. Nelinkertaiset tanko-osat toimitetaan suodatinkärjen kiinnityskoneeseen, joka leikkaa jokaisen nelinkertaisen tanko-osan kahtia kahden kaksoissuodatintanko-osan muodostamiseksi, jotka kumpikin osa yhdistetään akselin suunnassa kohdistettuna ja päittäin rajakkain asetettuna kahteen päällystettyyn tupakkatankoon. Lopullinen leikkaus tehdään kaksiosaiseksi leikatun tangon keskiviivaa pitkin kahden kaksoissuodatinsavuk-keen muodostamiseksi. The dashed lines 1¾ indicate the points where cuts can be made with the blade 58 of the plug manufacturing device 10 to obtain quadruple double filter rod parts of the type shown in Fig. 2. The quadruple rod portions are delivered to a filter tip mounting machine that cuts each quadruple rod portion in half to form two dual filter rod portions, each of which is connected in an axially aligned and end-to-end position to the two coated tobacco rods. The final cut is made along the centerline of the two-piece rod to form two double filter cigarettes.

Of course, separate and different additives can be mixed and placed in individual cavities 16. Therefore, more than one cavity 16 with the same or different additives 18 can be placed in each individual filter segment to be connected to the base of the cigarette to treat smoke as desired.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that other types of additives may be used in the batch process of this invention. In addition, the additive used does not have to be in dry form.
Although a particular relatively preferred embodiment of the present invention has been disclosed and described in detail herein, it is to be understood that it does not in any way limit the present invention, the limits of which are set forth in the appended claims.
