Abstract
A process for the preparation of a coated TiO2 pigment, consisting essentially of a pigmentary TiO2 core, a dense inner coating of 1% to 10% by weight of dense amorphous silica, calculated as Si02 and based on said pigment TiO2 and 0 to 5% by weight of alumina, calculated as Al2O3 and based on said pigmentary TiO2 and a porous external coating of porous silica and alumina, the porous silica being present in a proportion of 0.5 to 15% by weight, calculated as SiO2 and based on the pigmentary TiO2 and the alumina being present in a proportion of 0.5 to 11% by weight, calculated as Al2O3 and based on said pigmentary TiO2, whose procedure consists of: (i) adjusting to the pH of an aqueous suspension of pigmentary TiO2 that, optionally, may have been previously heated to a temperature comprised between 80 and 90ºC, to a value comprised between approximately 9 and 10. (ii) adding to said suspension an aqueous solution of soluble silicate, in an amount calculated to provide from 1 to 10% by weight of silica, calculated as SiO2 and based on said pigment TiO2. (iii) slowly add a dilute aqueous acid to said suspension until its pH is 6 to 7.7. (iiia) optionally adding to said suspension, maintained at a pH of 6 to 9, an aqueous solution of soluble aluminate in an amount calculated to provide 0.5 to 5% by weight of alumina, calculated as Al203 and based on said Ti02 pigmentary. (iv) adding to said suspension, maintained at a pH of 5 to 9, an aqueous solution of a soluble silicate in an amount calculated to provide 0.5 to 15%, by weight of silica, calculated as Si02 and based on said Pigmentary TiO2. (v) adding to said suspension, maintained at a pH of 4 to 9, an aqueous solution of a soluble aluminate in an amount calculated to provide 0.5 to 11% by weight of alumina, calculated as Al2O3 and based on said TiO2 pigmentary. (vi) adjust the pH of said suspension between 7 and 9. (vii) separating the resulting coated TiO2 pigment from said suspension, optionally after step (iii) and/or before step (v), curing said suspension for at least 50 minutes.
