Abstract

A method of treating a polymeric plastic substrate prior to plating the surface thereof, comprising corroding the substrate in an aqueous acidic bath, activating the surface of the substrate by contact with an activator which is an acid tin complex -palladium, rinsing the activated surface with an aqueous medium and thereby forming, on said surface, tin and palladium hydroxides and accelerating said activated surface and rinsing with a solution comprising an inorganic acid, a metal salt capable of reduced to the metallic state by an iron-bearing surface selected from Group VIII B of the Periodic Table, excluding iron, and a compound capable of ionizing to give fluoride ions, whereby substantially all tin hydroxide is removed without interference with the catalytic properties of the remaining palladium hydroxide.
