A process for converting polynuclear, refractory aromatic hydrocarbons contained in a light cycle oil, comprising passing said cycle oil in contact with a catalyst, in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature of from about 260ºC to about 455ºC and at a pressure of about 28 kg/cm2 to about 140 kg/cm2, and selectively hydrogenate the aromatic hydrocarbons contained therein, to form aromatic hydrocarbons in which the single unsaturation is in a single benzene core, said catalyst comprising a group vib metal and a group viii metal, deposited on a silica-alumina compound, said compound comprising about 35 to 65% silica, the total aromatics content of said light cycle oil not being substantially varied by said conversion.
