Abstract

1,155,584. Making combustible gas. DR. C. OTTO & COMP. G.m.b.H., and SIMONCARVES Ltd. 22 June, 1966 [22 June, 1965], No. 27847/66. Heading C5E. A gas having a high content of H 2 and CO is made by catalytically hydrogenating a gas derived from the carbonization of coal, and catalytically cracking the hydrogenated gas in the presence of steam, and optionally of air. Hydrogenation is carried out over a cobaltmolybdenum catalyst (converting organic sulphur compounds to H 2 S and olefines to saturated hydrocarbons) at a pressure in the range 1.5 to 30 atmos. absolute and a temperature in the range 250‹ to 700‹ C. Cracking is carried out over a nickel catalyst at a pressure in the above range and at a temperature in the range 600‹ to 1200‹ C. H 2 S is either removed from the gas between the hydrogenation and cracking stages, or, with naphthalene, prior to hydrogenation. The initial gas is cooled for the removal of liquids prior to hydrogenating, and naphthalene may be removed by washing the gas with these liquids, before or after compressing the gas to hydrogenating pressure. Alternatively, the temperature may be kept above the naphthalene dewpoint during hydrogenation and H 2 S removal. Two specific examples are described.
