Abstract

An explosive shell for high speed rotation comprises preformed shrapnel material 8 positioned between an outer sleeve 7 and an inner sleeve 4 which is integral with the body 3 of the projectile and contains an explosive charge 9, the inner sleeve being dimensioned to transmit to a front portion 1 of the shell a portion of the axial forces generated by the propellant gases when the shell is fired, with the outer sleeve 7 transmitting the remaining portion of the axial forces to the front portion 1 whilst retaining the shrapnel material 8 until the charge 9 is exploded. The inner sleeve 4 has twice the thickness of the sleeve 7 and transmits the major portion of the axial forces. A ring 6 connects the inner and outer sleeves together. A copper driving band 3a rotates the shell at high speed when fired. The shrapnel material 8 comprises balls, cylinders or rings held together in a cylinder of plastics material.
