A procedure for the preparation of new 5-aroyl-pyrrole-2- or -3-carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid derivatives of general formulas: **(See formula)** and the therapeutically useful salts of the corresponding carboxylic acids, where Ar1 is a phenyl or phenyl group substituted with one or more of the following substituents: halogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy and R3 represents a member selected from the group consisting of COOH, COO -lower alkyl, CONH2, CONH-lower alkyl and CON- (lower alkyl) 2'whose process is characterized by decarboxylating a compound of general formula: **(See formula)** or of general formula: **(See formula)** where Ar1 is as defined above, heating in a basic organic solvent to prepare compounds of general formula: **(See formula)** convert the compound (XXIV) obtained, if desired by hydrolysis, into the corresponding acid, esterify the free acid thus obtained or the free acid obtained from compound (XXII) and of general formula (XXIII), if desired, with a lower alcohol or convert said free acid to its amide, lower alkylamide or dialkyl (lower) amide according to known procedures, or convert said free acid with a base into a therapeutically useful salt.
