Abstract
An electromagnetically operated vacuum relay has fixed contact carrying plates 26, 32 separated by a tubular insulator 16 of the sealed envelope and provided with respective extensions 50, 52 which extend axially of the envelope to overlap each other in spaced relationship on opposite sides of movable contacts 46, 48 and form the fixed contacts of the relay. The movable contacts are on a rod 40 mounted on a diaphragm 36 and movable by an electromagnet 14 to close contacts 48, 52 or 46, 50, the contact movement being the same in either direction. The contact extensions 50, 52 have a U-shape and are off-set so that sides 56, 58 overlap to form contact shields. The diaphragm 36 is secured to an apertured annular plate 39 attached to a lower insulator 18, the aperture in the plate being accurately dimensioned to determine the effective area of the diaphragm.
