Abstract

A launder 3 incorporating a refractory nozzle 6 closed by a stopper 8 operated by mechanism 9 is attached to and tiltable with a melting furnace 1 about an axis 20 from a non-operative vertical position to an operative position to discharge molten metal into a mould 22 which is purged prior to pouring with an inert gas, e.g. argon, supplied through a pipe 21. A lever (15, Fig. 2) attached to rod 13 controls displacement of the stopper 8. In an alternative arrangement as shown in Fig. 13, wherein the launder 3B and furnace 1B are enclosed in a vacuum chamber 31, automatic means 32 are provided for operating the stopper 8B. The modified mechanism 9B incorporates a striker 42 carried by a rod 13B and loaded by the coil springs 41. The means 32 comprise a chain (49, Fig. 8) passing over a ratchet wheel (59), one end being connected to a slidable bar carrying an arm 44, the other connected to a balance weight 52. To fill a mould 22B the furnace and launder are rotated about axis 20B such that the striker 42 forces downwardly against the arm 44, thus producing a reaction in the springs 41 which in turn raises the stopper 8B. The arm is moved downwardly and held in its new position by a panel (62) engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
