Abstract

A composite material comprises a body of "base" material and a plurality of metallic fibres having a rough non-machined surface and a mean diameter of the order of 1 mil or less embedded in the body for providing reinforcement thereof. The fibres may be disposed at a surface zone of the body and the volume ratio of the fibres to "base" material in the surface zone may be at least of the order of 40%. The fibres may comprise continuous filaments which may be in the form of a roving or yarn textured continuous filaments e.g. bulk, looped and crimped yarns a non-woven mat a woven fabric a weft knitted fabric a warp knitted fabric a diagonal pattern braid a combination of at least two configurations including non-woven mat, woven fabric, weft or warp knitted fabrics and diagonal pattern braid configurations short generally straight fibres extending generally perpendicularly to the surface of the zone a fabric extending generally parallel to the surface of the zone and defining a plurality of interstices, and a plurality of short, generally straight fibres extending in the interstices generally perpendicularly to the surface or a knitted fabric having a rib formed therein. The body may be tubular and the surface zone may comprise the radially inner or outer circumferential surface zone thereof. The fibres may define a knit metal fabric embedded in the surface zone to provide resistance to abrasion of the composite material at the surface zone the body may be tubular and the fabric comprises a tubular structure which may be seamless and may be provided with a rib which may be helical the surface of the zone may follow the contour of the ribbed fabric. The fibres may be of an electrical resistance material and are in electrical contact with each other in the body to define a resistance heater structure. The fibres may be of a metal having a modulus of elasticity at least of the order of 20 million p.s.i. and may have a tensile strength at least of the 'order of 250,000 p.s.i. The "body" may be formed of any mouldable material such as conventional thermoplastic and thermosetting resins e.g. epoxy resins, polyimides, tetrafluoroethylene polymers, phenol-formaldehyde and resorcinol-formaldehyde resins natural and artificial rubber ceramics and glass. The body may contain other property-affecting materials such as glass fibres. The fibres may be of stainless steel, niobium, nickel, tungsten, iron, aluminium, carbon steel, and chrome nickel alloys. The tubular composite material may be produced by placing or stretching a seamless knit tube over a mandrel and moulding the body material therabout in conventional manner.
