Abstract

Phenol is reacted with aqueous formaldehyde at a pH between 8 and 10 until the reaction mixture contains 2% by weight or less of unreacted formaldehyde, and the product is reacted with urea or dicyandiamide. The resulting aqueous solution is suitable for bonding mineral fibres, e.g. glass fibres. In examples two parts phenol and six parts formalin were mixed and left to stand at pH9, and then heated to 65 DEG C. One part of urea was added before or after the heating was started, after the initial mixture had stood for some time. Dicyandiamide may replace urea. Metal ions in the resin solution may be replaced by ammonium or hydrogen ions, using an ion exchanger. The modified resin solutions may be mixed with 0.05-0.5% by weight of a silane RnSiY4- n, wherein R is an organic group which may contain amino, vinyl, aldehyde or hydroxyphenyl groups, Y is an alkoxy, aryloxy, amino, hydroxy or halogen and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4.
