Abstract
516,369. Titanium pigments. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., OPPEGAARD, A. G., and STOPFORD, C. J. June 23, 1938, No. 18645. [Classes 1 (iii) and 95] In the production of titanium pigments by calcination of the product of hydrolysis of a titanium salt solution, there is caused to be present in the product subjected to calcination niobium or tantalum or a mixture of the two in an amount equivalent to not more than 2 per cent. of the weight of the titanium present calculated as TiO 2.The invention may be applied to straight titanium pigments and to composite titanium pigments containing an extender such as barium or calcium sulphate. In carrying out the process niobium oxide or potassium niobate may be added to the titanium ore, to the solution to be hydrolysed, or to the hydrolysis product; or a niobium ore may be added to the titanium ore to provide the desired quantity of niobium ; or a titanium ore free from niobium and/or tantalum may be blended with a titanium ore containing these metals in such proportions that the product subjected to calcination has the desired content of niobium and/or tantalum. Calcination may be effected in the presence also of additive agents hitherto used, such as phosphoric-acid and phosphates, fluorine compounds, soluble alkali metal compounds, for instance, potassium carbonate, antimony compounds, or boric acid and borates. Temperatures above 925‹C. and even up to 1,100 ‹C. may be used for the calcinations. Examples of operation are given.
