Derartige Langhalsschleifer werden üblicherweise zur Bearbeitung von Wänden insbesondere nach Spachtelarbeiten im Trockenbau oder zur Vorbereitung eines Wandanstriches nach Renovierungsarbeiten verwendet. Typische Langhalsschleifer nach dem Stand der Technik weisen eine rotier- oder oszillierbare Schleifscheibe auf, welche in einem Kopfteil des Schleifers angeordnet ist. Das Kopfteil ist in der Regel auf einem langestreckten Handgriff angeordnet, entlang dessen üblicherweise eine Antriebseinheit zum Antrieb der Schleifscheibe - meist mittels einer flexiblen Welle - angebracht ist. Um den Bediener und auch die Umgebung vor dem Austreten von Schleifstaub zu schützen, wird in der Umgebung der Schleifscheibe meist eine Staubschutzeinrichtung realisiert, durch welche ein gegenüber der Umgebung weitgehend abgeschlossener Absaugraum gebildet wird. So wird beispielsweise vorgeschlagen, mittels öffenbarer Klappen einer Bereich zu schaffen, in welchem sich die Schleifscheibe maximal an eine angrenzende Fläche annähern kann. Derartige Klappen sind jedoch üblicherweise mechanisch aufwendig ausgeführt und störanfällig; ferner wird zum Öffnen und Schließen der Klappen (beim Übergang von randnahem Schleifen zu randfernen Schleifen und umgekehrt) üblicherweise ein Absetzen des Schleifers von der bearbeiteten Fläche erforderlich, was das Arbeiten zusätzlich erschwert. Der Kopfteil des erfindungsgemäßen Langhalsschleifers ist dabei in der Weise ausgebildet, dass ein möglichst dichtes Annähern eines Schleiftellers an die entsprechende Kante gewährleistet wird, um eine möglichst vollständige Bearbeitung der jeweiligen Fläche zu ermöglichen. Hierzu wird auf die nachfolgenden Figuren verwiesen. Durch die ebene Ausbildung des Gleitabschnittes 61 werden im Wesentlichen zwei Effekte erreicht: Einerseits wird vermieden, dass lokal ein zu großer Anpressdruck des Kopfteiles an die entsprechende Raumkante entsteht, was zu Beschädigungen der gegebenenfalls bereits endbearbeiteten Nachbarfläche führen könnte. Andererseits kann der ebene Gleitabschnitt 61 in vorteilhafter Weise als Anlagefläche bei einem Verdrehen des Verstellflansches 6 gegenüber der Schutzhaube 4 insbesondere bei einem Wechsel von randnahem zu randfernem Schleifen verwendet werden. Hierzu bringt der Benutzer während der Betriebsart "randnahes Schleifen" den ebenen Gleitabschnitt 61 in Anlage mit der benachbarten, üblicherweise zur aktuell bearbeiteten Fläche senkrechten Nachbarfläche und verwendet diese als Widerlager bei einer Verdrehung des Verstellflansches 6 gegenüber der Schutzhaube 4. Besonders vorteilhaft ist dabei, dass der Benutzer im Unterschied zum Stand der Technik den Langhalsschleifer nicht absetzen muss, um von einer Betriebsart in die andere überzugehen.
