Abstract
Description
- The present invention pertains to organizers and more particularly to vanity organizers.
- Vanity items such as jewelry and cosmetics, for example, makeup, hair styling products, creams, lotions, etc., are often stored in a number of storage receptacles, for example, cabinets and chests, that may vary considerably from one another, according to the type of item stored therein and the intended placement thereof, for example in a drawer, on a counter or dresser top, or on a floor. Thus, these various storage receptacles may not be conveniently located with respect to one another. What is needed is a single storage organizer accommodating many, if not all, of these vanity items in an organized fashion and providing flexibility for ease of access to each item.

US-A-4753495 discloses a merchandising stand rotatably mounted on a base allowing the stand to be rotated to allow all surfaces of the stand to be viewable to a customer. The stand includes three walls and a door defining an interior space that may include a pair of shelves. The exterior surface of the walls may carry adapter panels for displaying merchandise. -

US-A-4463856 teaches a jewelry display stand having a number of vertical side panels on which display arms and slots are provided to mount and display jewelry items on the exterior surface of the display stand. The display stand is mounted on a rotatable base to allow rotation of the display stand. -
US-A-5542758 relates to a wardrobe for clothing and shoes which is rotatable about a base. The wardrobe defines an inner space that may include shelves and hangers, and additional rackes provided on the outer walls of the wardrobe. - A storage organizer in accordance with the present invention has the features as set out in
claim 1. - The following drawings are illustrative of particular embodiments of the present invention and therefore do not limit the scope of the invention. The drawings are not to scale (unless so stated) and are intended for use in conjunction with the explanations in the following detailed description. Rather, the following description provides practical illustrations for implementing exemplary embodiments of the present invention.

Figure 1A is a side elevation view of anorganizer 10 according to some embodiments of the present invention; andFigure 1B is a section view through section line A-A ofFigure 1A .Figures 1A-B illustrate a cabinet oforganizer 10 including a firstinterior space 101 and a secondinterior space 102, each formed by a first sidewall 11, asecond sidewall 12 opposite first side wall 11, atop wall 13 and abottom wall 14, each extending from first sidewall 11 tosecond sidewall 12; aback wall 16 extends from first sidewall 11 tosecond side wall 12 and fromtop wall 13 tobottom wall 14 such that firstinterior space 101 is disposed on afirst side 161 ofback wall 16 and secondinterior space 102 is disposed on asecond side 162 ofback wall 16. According to embodiments of the present invention,swivel joint 145 allows the cabinet to swivel 360 degrees aboutbase 15, so that aperson using organizer 10 may rotate the cabinet about a vertical axis, per arrow A, in order to gain access to all sides oforganizer 10.Figure 1D is a top view oforganizer 10 further illustrating various swivel positions oforganizer 10 with dashed lines. An exemplary embodiment ofswivel joint 145 will be described below in conjunction withFigures 4A-B . -
Figure 1B further illustrates a depth D of the cabinet, a depth D1 of firstinterior space 101 and a depth D2 of secondinterior space 102; according to an exemplary embodiment depth D is approximately seven inches (about 180 mm), depth D1 is approximately 3 and 9/16 inches (about 90 mm), and depth D2 is approximately 2 and 9/16 inches (about 65 mm). According to the illustrated embodiment, firstinterior space 101 is configured to accommodate cosmetic items and secondinterior space 102 is configured to accommodate jewelry items, as will be described in greater detail below, in conjunction withFigures 2A-C andFigure 3 , respectively. It should be understood that, according to alternate embodiments of the present invention, bothinterior spaces spaces organizer 10 is shown including twointerior spaces spaces second sidewalls 11, 12, as is shown in cross-section inFigure 5 . -
Figure 1C is a front elevation view oforganizer 10 fromFigures 1A-B .Figure 1C illustrates a width W and height H oforganizer 10; according to an exemplary embodiment, width W is approximately nine and ½ inches (about 240 mm) and height H is approximately nineteen and ½ inches (about 500 mm).Figure 1C further illustrates a height h ofbase 15 and a clearance c betweenbase 15 and the cabinet to accommodate swiveling action. According to an exemplary embodiment, base height h is approximately 5/16 of an inch (about 8 mm) and clearance c is approximately 1/16 of an inch (about 1.5 mm). -
Figures 2A-B are elevation views of firstinterior space 101 oforganizer 10 andFigure 8 is a perspective view ofinterior space 101 showing various cosmetic items stored therein.Figure 2A illustratesinterior space 101 including two shelf likecontainers 21 that each include a plurality ofcompartments 210, eachcompartment 210 having an opening directed towardtop wall 13. According to some embodiments of the present invention,containers 21 are pivotally mounted to first andsecond sidewalls 11, 12 for rotation from a first position, in whichcontainers 21 are shown inFigure 1A , to a second position, in whichcontainers 21 are shown inFigure 1B .Figure 2C is a perspective view of one ofcontainers 21 disassembled frominterior space 101 to show howcontainers 21 are pivotally mounted.Figure 2C illustratescontainer 21 adapted to be pivotally mounted onpins 215, onepin 215 protruding from each ofsidewalls 11 and 12; eachpin 215 mates in aslot 213 formed in either end of eachcontainer 21. According to the illustrated embodiment, afront end 211 of eachslot 213 rests on thecorresponding pin 215 in the first position (Figure 2A ) untilcontainer 21 is lifted slightly to allow eachslot 213 to slide forward from eachpin 215, so that anopposing end 217 of eachslot 213 rests against eachpin 215, such thatcontainer 21 is tilted forward into the second position (Figure 2B ). The dashed lines inFigure 2C represent an end profile ofcontainer 21 tilted into the second position, whereinend 217 ofslot 213 is resting onpin 215. According to the illustrated embodiment, an upper surface ofcontainer 21, corresponding to the openings ofcompartments 210, is disposed at an angle β of approximately 45 degrees, with respect to a horizontal plane, whencontainer 21 is in the second position. - Each
compartment 210 ofcontainers 21 may hold tubes or bottles of cosmetics (Figure 8 ), for example lipstick or nail polish, respectively, and, according to an exemplary embodiment, have a width, depth and height of approximately 7/8 of an inch (about 22 mm). The second, or tilted position of containers 21 (Figure 2B ) may allow for easier access tocompartments 210 for insertion and removal of items. With reference toFigure 2A , a spacing S21 betweencontainers 21, measured from a bottom of one to the bottom of the other, according to an exemplary embodiment, is approximately 3 and ¼ inches (about 80 mm); theuppermost container 21 may also be spaced a similar distance fromtop wall 13. - Referring back to
Figure 2A , a second type of shelf-like container 24 is shown disposed ininterior space 101; according to the illustrated embodiment,container 24 is partitioned intocompartments 240 by dividers extending from a front sidewall ofcontainer 24 to backwall 16. According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a width of eachcompartment 240 is approximately two inches (about 50 mm), a depth of eachcompartment 240 is approximately 1 and 3/8 inches (about 35 mm), and a height of eachcompartment 240, defined by the front sidewall, is approximately 1 and 7/16 inches (about 37 mm). According to the illustrated embodiment, eachcompartment 240 can hold wider items thancompartments 210, for example jars of cream or eye-shadow compacts. The dividers ofcontainer 24 may be permanently positioned, or removable so that a user oforganizer 10 may adjust the partitioning ofcontainer 24 to re-configurecompartments 240.Figure 2A further illustrates alower compartment 250 formed by afront sidewall 25 extending up frombottom wall 14 and across from first sidewall 11 tosecond sidewall 12. According to an exemplary embodiment,compartment 250 has a depth of approximately 1 and ¾ inches. According to the illustrated embodiment,compartment 250 can hold larger items than each ofcompartments 240, for example bottles of lotion or hair styling products (Figure 8 ). With reference toFigure 2B , a spacing S241 betweencontainers bottom wall 14 andcontainer 24 may be approximately 7 and ½ inches (about 190 mm). -
Figure 2A further illustrates additional shelf-like containers interior surface 118 ofdoor 110; each ofcontainers 22 includecompartments 220 andcontainer 23 includescompartments 230. According to an exemplary embodiment, eachcompartment 220 has a width of approximately four inches (about 100 mm), a depth of approximately ¾ of an inch (about 19 mm) and a height of approximately one inch (about 25 mm), and eachcompartment 230 has a width of approximately one and 3/8 inch (about 35 mm), a depth of approximately ¾ of an inch (about 19 mm), and a height of approximately two inches (about 50 mm). As previously described forcontainer 24, dividers ofcontainers compartments organizer 10 can reconfigure the compartments of each container. With reference toFigure 2B , a spacing S22 betweencontainers 22, measured from a bottom of one to a bottom of the other, may be approximately three and ½ inches (about 90 mm), a spacing S221 between a top ofdoor 110 and the bottom of theuppermost container 22 may be approximately three inches, and a spacing S23 betweencontainer 23 and thelowermost container 22, measured from a bottom of one to a bottom of the other, may be approximately seven and ½ inches (about 190 mm). -
Figure 3 is an elevation view of secondinterior space 102 oforganizer 10 andFigure 9 is a perspective view ofinterior space 102 showing various jewelry items stored therein.Figure 3 illustrates several jewelry storage elements mounted withininterior space 102 between first andsecond sidewalls 11, 12; the storage elements, which are all shown attached to backwall 16, include a ring storage element 34, ahook bar 32 supporting a plurality of hooks, and a pocket-like receptacle 33.Figure 3 further illustrates pocket-like receptacle 33 disposed belowhook bar 32, for example, so that lower portions of necklaces, which would be hanging from the hooks, can be received within pocket-like receptacle 33, for example, to prevent damage or tangling. According to the illustrated embodiment, ring storage element 34 includes a plurality ofslits 340 arranged in an array of rows and columns; each slit 340 is compliant and sized for an interference fit about a single ring.Slits 340 may be formed in a foam panel, which is glued to backwall 16, or by a plurality of parallel rolls positioned adjacent one another to form the slits therebetween. Althoughslits 340 are illustrated extending in a horizontal direction, slits 340 may alternately extend in a vertical direction. Pocket-like receptacle 33 may be formed by a fabric panel including an elastic member attached to an upper edge thereof, which may be stretched to openreceptacle 33 to receive portions of necklaces hung from the hooks ofhook bar 32. -
Figure 3 further illustrates several additional jewelry storage elements mounted on aninner surface 128 ofdoor 120; the additional storage elements include anearring storage element 31, asecond hook bar 32 supporting a plurality of hooks, and a second pocket-like receptacle 33 disposed in proximity to hookbar 32 to accommodate relatively short jewelry items hung fromhook bar 32, for example bracelets. According to the illustrated embodiment, earring storage element includes a plurality ofhorizontal cross-bars 315 spanningposts 310 that are attached toinner surface 128 ofdoor 120; eachhorizontal cross bar 315 includes a plurality of openings, each dimensioned to receive an earring. - Further details regarding the jewelry storage elements described herein are included in commonly assigned patent application, publication no. 2005/0093405. Furthermore, it should be noted that any or all of the storage elements of the present invention may be designed to be moveable within
interior space 102, as described in the aforementioned commonly assigned patent application, and, any additional storage items not described herein but described in the aforementioned patent application may also be incorporated into embodiments of the present invention. -
Figure 4A is a section view of an exemplary embodiment of swivel joint 145 fromFigure 1A ; andFigure 4B is a section view through section line B-B ofFigure 4A . As previously described, swivel joint 145 allows the cabinet to swivel 360 degrees aboutbase 15, so that aperson using organizer 10 may rotate the cabinet to gain access to different sides thereof, for example to initially access firstinterior space 101 and then to access secondinterior space 102.Figure 4A illustrates swivel joint 145 including aball bearing assembly 43coupling base 15 to aswivel mount 41, which is coupled tobottom wall 14 of the cabinet; acavity 435 ofbase 15 contains this coupling, and anannular groove 425, formed inbase 15, contains a turningring 42 includingcasters 420, which support a weight of the cabinet while allowing swiveling action.Figure 4B illustratesmount 41 including an outward projectingprotrusion 410 andannular groove 425 including a plurality of inward projectingprotrusions 450 disposed about a perimeter thereof. According to the illustrated embodiment,protrusion 410 along with each ofprotrusions 450 form a pair of mating stops asprotrusion 410 ofmount 41 rotates past each ofprotrusions 450; the mating stops will slow or stop the rotation of the cabinet at discrete locations about the 360 degree-revolution thereof. The mating stops can regulate a speed of rotation so that aperson using organizer 10 does not inadvertently spin the cabinet past a desired point, and can hold the cabinet at a desired point about the 360 degree-revolution. It should be noted that alternate embodiments of the present invention may include a fewer or a greater number ofprotrusions 450 ingroove 450 to provide a different number of mating stops; furthermore, additional embodiments include other types of stops or no stops at all. -
Figure 5 is a section view through anorganizer 50 according to alternate embodiments of the present invention.Figure 5 illustratesorganizer 50 including a cabinet having fourinterior spaces interior space 101 oforganizer 10, or jewelry storage elements, for example as described for secondinterior space 102 oforganizer 10, or a combination of both. First and secondinterior spaces first side wall 511, asecond sidewall 512 and a back wall 516 extending between first andsecond sidewalls interior space 503 is shown formed by a pair ofsidewalls 513 and 523 extending from opposing ends offirst sidewall 511; and fourthinterior space 504 is shown formed by a pair ofsidewalls 514 and 524 extending from opposing ends ofsecond sidewall 512.Figure 5 further illustrates eachinterior space corresponding doors sidewalls organizer 50 further includes a base 515 on which the cabinet is pivotally mounted, so that a user may swivel the cabinet for access to each ofinterior spaces base 515 by a swivel joint, which may be similar to that described fororganizer 10. - Organizers according to the present invention may be of any proportions, for example, one group of embodiments has a relatively large overall size, for example, to stand on a floor, and another group of embodiments has a relatively small overall size, for example, to stand on a counter-top or dresser-top. In either case, some of the embodiments, which include a mirror, for example, as depicted in
Figures 1A and1C , further include a tilt mechanism in order to orient the mirror at an angle with respect to a vertical axis. For the floor models, an upward tilt of the mirror may be particularly desired, however it is contemplated that an upward tilt would also be desirable for the counter-top or dresser-top models, particularly if the top on which the organizer is placed is around waist height.Figures 6A-7C illustrate several embodiments of tilt mechanisms. Of course other types of tilting mechanisms now known or later invented may be used. For example,U.S. Patent No. 5,870,858 entitled "Christmas Tree Stand", describes a tilt mechanism which may be adapted for use with organizers of the present invention. Furthermore, foot activated mechanisms for applying either a lever or a wedging action may be incorporated into tilting mechanisms for organizers of the present invention. -
Figures 6A-B are a side elevation view and a top view of anorganizer 60. This does not fall within the scope of the claims as it shows only a single interior space.Figures 6A-B illustrateorganizer 60 including first sidewall 11,second sidewall 12 opposite first side wall 11,top wall 13 andbottom wall 14, each extending from first sidewall 11 tosecond sidewall 12; aback wall 16 extends from first sidewall 11 tosecond side wall 12 and fromtop wall 13 tobottom wall 14. Similar to the cabinet of previously illustratedorganizer 10, the aforementioned walls enclose an interior space of the cabinet, which is accessible viadoor 120 that may be hinged to first side wall 11; the cabinet is also similarly coupled by swivel joint 145 tobase 15. A mirror may be disposed on an outer surface of either or both ofdoor 120 andback wall 16, andFigure 6A further illustrates organizer including atilt mechanism 650 to orientorganizer 60 and thus mirror(s) at an angle with respect to a vertical axis. According to the illustrated embodiment,tilt mechanism 650 includes afirst telescoping leg 654 and asecond telescoping leg 656, which each include aninner portion 651 and anouter portion 652, into whichinner portion 651 extends. -
Figure 6C is a detail view of one oftelescoping legs Figure 6C illustrates alocking pin 653 holdinginner portion 651 in place with respect toouter portion 652 at a desired extension ofinner portion 651 fromouter portion 652. According to the illustrated embodiment,outer portion 651 includes a hole (not shown), passing through opposing sidewalls thereof, andinner portion 651 includes a series of holes (not shown) spaced along a length thereof, each hole extending through opposing sidewalls thereof; an alignment of inner and outer holes provides a passageway forpin 653 to pass in order to reversibly lockportions inner portion 651 fromouter portion 652.Figure 6A illustratesinner portions 651 extending equidistance fromouter portions 652 of first andsecond legs organizer 60 is not tilted;Figure 6A further illustrates, with dashed lines, a tilt oforganizer 60 that would result ifinner portion 651 offirst leg 654 were to be extended, per arrow C. Ifdoor 120 includes a mirror disposed on an outer surface thereof, it will be appreciated that the tilt shown by the dashed lines will provide a person, whose eye-level is within a range extending along and above an upper portion of the mirror, an improved view into the mirror. -
Figure 7A is a front elevation view of anorganizer 70. The illustrated embodiment does not fall within the scope of the claims as only one interior space is shown.Figure 7A illustrates adoor 720, which provides access to an interior space of a cabinet oforganizer 70; the cabinet oforganizer 70 may include one or more interior spaces, for example, similar to eitherorganizer 10 ororganizer 50, previously illustrated, and is shown coupled tobase 15 byswivel joint 145.Figure 7A further illustrates apanel 721 including a mirror 726 and ahandle 725, each disposed on an outer surface thereof;panel 721 is shown coupled todoor 720 by a pair ofhinges 730. -
Figure 7B is a section view of a door of the organizer shown inFigure 7A , according to one embodiment.Figure 7B illustratesdoor 720 including a recessedarea 724 into whichpanel 721 is fitted.Figure 7B further illustratespanel 721 including a tilt mechanism, which is formed by anarm 723 joined to panel at a pivot joint 722, in combination with hinges 730. According to the illustrated embodiment, a lower portion ofpanel 721 may be pulled away fromdoor 720, for example, viahandle 725, to be reversibly locked in a tilted position, whenarm 723 rotates about pivot joint 722 and becomes extended to support panel as illustrated inFigure 7C . According to some embodiments arm 723 is disposed near a midpoint of a width ofpanel 721 and may extend across the width; according to alternate embodiments,multiple arms 723 may be spaced apart approximately across the width ofpanel 721. It may be appreciated that the tilt ofpanel 721 shown inFigure 7C will provide a person, whose eye-level is within a range extending along and above an upper portion of the mirror, an improved view into mirror 726. - In the foregoing detailed description, the invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments. However, it may be appreciated that various modifications and changes can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Claims (13)
- A storage organizer (10, 50) for vanity items comprising:a cabinet including a first sidewall (11, 511), a second sidewall (12, 512) opposing the first sidewall (11, 511), a top wall (13) extending from the first sidewall (11, 511) to the second sidewall (12, 512), and a bottom wall (14) opposing the top wall (13) and extending from the first sidewall (11, 511) to the second sidewall (12, 512); and,a base (15) joined to the bottom wall (14) by a swivel joint (145), the swivel joint (145) allowing the cabinet to rotate 360 degrees about the base (15),characterised in that:the cabinet further includes a back wall (16, 516), which has a first side (161) and a second side (162) and extends from the first sidewall (11, 511) to the second sidewall (12, 512) and from the top wall (13) to the bottom wall (14), a first interior space (101, 501), which is formed on the first side (161) of the back wall (16, 516) by the first sidewall (11, 511), the second sidewall (12, 512), the bottom wall (14), the top wall (13) and the back wall (16, 516), and a second interior space (102, 502), which is formed on the second side (162) of the back wall (16, 516) by the first sidewall (11, 511), the second sidewall (12, 512), the bottom wall (14), the top wall (13) and the back wall (16, 516); andthe organizer (10, 50) further comprising:a first door (110, 510) for the first interior space (101, 501), extending between the top wall (13) and the bottom wall (14) and from the first sidewall (11, 511) to the second sidewall (12, 512) when in a closed position; and,a second door (120, 520) for the second interior space (101, 501), extending between the top wall (13) and the bottom wall (14) and from the first sidewall (11, 511) to the second sidewall (12, 512) when in a closed position.
- The organizer (50) according to claim 1, wherein:the first sidewall(511) of the cabinet includes a first side and a second side and the first and second interior spaces (501; 502) are disposed on the first side of the first sidewall (511); and the cabinet further includes a third sidewall (513) and a fourth sidewall (523) extending from the second side of the first side wall (501) and a third interior space (503) disposed on the second side of the first sidewall (511) between the third and fourth sidewalls (513; 523).
- The organizer (50) according to claim 2, wherein:the second sidewall (512) of the cabinet includes a first side and a second side and the first and second interior spaces (501; 502) are disposed on the first side of the second sidewall (512); andthe cabinet further includes a fifth sidewall (514) and a sixth sidewall (524) extending from the second side of the second side wall (512) and a fourth interior space (504) disposed on the second side of the second sidewall (512) between the fifth and sixth sidewalls (514; 524).
- The organizer (10, 50) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a shelf-like container (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) mounted within the first interior space (101, 501) of the cabinet, or mounted on an interior surface (118) of the first door (110, 510).
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 4, wherein the shelf-like container (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) is pivotally mounted to the first and second sidewalls (11, 511; 12, 512) for rotation from a first position to a second position.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 5, wherein the shelf-like container (21,22, 23, 24, 25) includes at least one compartment (210, 220, 230, 240, 250), the at least one compartment (210, 220, 230, 240, 250) having an opening, the opening directed toward the top wall (13) when the shelf-ike container (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) is in the first position and directed outward from the first interior space (101, 501) when the shelf-like container (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) is in the second position.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 6, wherein the at least one compartment (210, 220, 230, 240, 250) of the shelf-like container (21, 22, 23, 24, 25) includes a plurality of compartments.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising at least one jewelry storage element (31, 32, 33) mounted within the second interior space (102, 502), or mounted on an inner surface of the second door (120, 520).
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 8, wherein the at least one jewelry storage element comprises at least one of a hook bar (32) and a plurality of cross-bars (315), each of which cross-bars includes a plurality of openings, each of which openings is dimensioned to receive an earning.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a mirror disposed on an outer surface of either or both of the first and second doors (110, 510; 120,520).
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 10, further comprising a tilt mechanism to orient the or each mirror at an angle with respect to a vertical axis.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the swivel joint (145) includes a pair of mating stops (410, 450) to slow rotation of the cabinet at a discrete location, the stops allowing rotation of the cabinet past the location.
- The organizer (10, 50) according to claim 12, wherein the swivel joint (145) includes a plurality of pairs of mating stops (410,450) to slow rotation of the cabinet, each at a corresponding discrete location, the pairs of stops (410,450) allowing rotation of the cabinet past each of the locations.
