- the invention provides a spindle for use with handles for windows or doors, comprising first spindle means, and second spindle means which can be assembled with the first spindle means to provide an elongate spindle, the position of the spindle means being adjustable with respect to one another to enable the length of the spindle to be pre-selected, the spindle assembly being such that when the spindle assembly is connected to handle means, the pre-selected spindle length becomes fixed.

- the first spindle means comprises an elongate member having an angular cross-section with at least one face and the second spindle means comprises at least one other elongate member which can be adjustably fitted to said face, to pre-select the length of the spindle assembly.
- the second spindle means may have a plurality of teeth arrangeable to engage with teeth on the first spindle means.
- the spindle means may be held together after assembly by fitting the spindle means into a socket and a handle such that the second spindle means can no longer move away from said faces so that the inter-engagement of the teeth fixes the predetermined length of the spindle.
- The, or each, second spindle means may have a generally T-shaped cross-section, for engagement in a generally T-shaped socket in a handle.
- the first spindle means may comprise a rigid member of fixed lengths, with the second spindle means comprising a member the length of which can be adjusted with respect to the first spindle means to vary the length of the spindle.
- the second spindle means comprises a spring.
- the spring comprises a compression spring.
- the invention includes a handle assembly incorporating a spindle assembly according to the invention.
- the invention includes a door or window fitted with a handle according to the invention.
- the spindle assembly shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a first spindle means in the form of a generally square cross-section, solid, spindle component 10, together with a second spindle means in the form of a pair of elongate plates 11.
- Each component 11 has a T-shaped cross-section and along the length of the leg of each T is a plurality of teeth 13, similar to teeth 12.
- the spindle assembly is designed for use with a pair of door handles, only one, 14, which is shown in the figures.
- the handle has a socket which has a square portion 15 and two, oppositely arranged T-shaped portions 16.
- the handle 14 is fitted to a mounting plate 17, which has holes 18 therein for securing the handle to the outside of a door.
- the spindle assembly will pass through the door, engaging with an internal catch mechanism and the spindle component 10 will engage in a square socket in another handle on the other side of the door.
- the length of the spindle assembly can be adjusted to suit the thickness of the door by moving the components 11 back and forth along the component 10, before the components are assembled together, until the desired length has been pre-selected.
- the assembled components as shown in Figure 1 are then slid into the socket in the handle 14.
- Each of the components 11 slides into one of the T-shaped sockets 16 and the end of the component 10 which lies between the components 11 passes into the square section socket 15.
- the length of the spindle assembly can be re-adjusted should the thickness of the door be different.
- a first spindle component 10 comprises a solid component of a generally square cross-section, the component being fixed in length.
- the second spindle means comprises a compression spring 19 attached to the end of the component 10.
- the compression spring 19 is slid into a socket 20 in the handle 14.
- the component 10 will pass through the door, engaging with an internal catch mechanism and will then engage in a square socket in another handle on the other side of the door.
- the length of the spindle assembly will automatically adjust to suit the thickness of the door by a greater or lesser degree of compression of the spring 19.
